1,690 ships called at the Port of Kiel in 2017, with a total tonnage of 37,720,156 NT. The total amount of handled cargo, i.e. 7,407,376 tons includes goods movement via public quay facilities (6,920,484 tons) and private facilities (486,892 tons). The public facilities mostly handled vehicles, grains, animal feed, stone chippings, general goods, forest products, oilseeds and fertilizer; the private facilities handled mineral oil, scrap and coal.

With 4,620,040 tons of incoming cargo and 2,787,336 tons of outgoing cargo, the ratio of receipt to dispatch shifted from 59.03 % : 40.97 % in 2016
to 62.37 % : 37.63 % in 2017.
In ferry traffic, the various check-in facilities have handled about 68.53 million passengers and 134.57 million tons of freight cargo since their commissioning. The number of passengers in ferry traffic in the year under review amounted to 1,602,994 and therefore exceeded the results of 2016 by 0.23 %, i.e. 3.619 passengers. In the freight sector, 6,143,673 tons of freight cargo were transhipped via the facilities managed by the PORT OF KIEL in 2017. This represents an increase of 671,050 tons (+12.26 %) compared to 2016.

Combined Traffic (Rail/Ship)
In 2017, a total of 29.656 units (2016: 29,316) was handled at the transhipment facilities at Ostuferhafen and Schwedenkai - an increase of 340 units (1.2 %).
In comparison to the previous year, the amount of handled containers increased by 3.536 TEU to 27,905, i.e. by 14.5 % in the year under review. The container tonnage increased by 62,348 tons to 380,551 tons of cargo, i.e. 20.8 %.
Cruise ships & excursion traffic
In the year under review, 143 cruise ships called at the Port of Kiel (2016: 147). A total of 513,906 passengers boarded or disembarked.
Passenger transport in ship excursion traffic offered in the Port of Kiel decreased by 1,609 passengers/3.7 %: 41,757 passengers were carried from and to Kiel.
