ENGIE Germany and PORT OF KIEL realise ambitious project for sustainable mobility in heavy goods transport

The integrated ENGIE Vianeo charging infrastructure uses exclusively green electricity, enabling ENGIE Germany to support the PORT OF KIEL on its journey to become one of the most environmentally friendly ports in Europe.

The project is a pioneer for sustainable port logistics in Europe.

(Kiel, 23rd October 2025) ENGIE Germany and the seaport of Kiel are jointly setting an example for greater sustainability in heavy goods transport. With ENGIE Vianeo, the subsidiary brand for e-charging infrastructure within the ENGIE Group, two locations with charging points for trucks are now being set up at the PORT OF KIEL: In the port, which is one of the most versatile and popular facilities on the Baltic Sea with a throughput of around 180,000 trucks and trailers per year, the charging points are scheduled to go into operation in late summer 2026. The charging stations with charging points on both sides will then supply the vehicles with 100 per cent green electricity from renewable energies.

As the first charging park in the ENGIE Vianeo network in Germany, the project will ensure that the seaport of Kiel, as a central component of the truck charging corridor in Europe, makes a significant contribution to the sustainability of European ports and promotes the ramp-up of electromobility. Dr Dirk Claus, Managing Director of SEEHAFEN KIEL GmbH & Co. KG, says: ‘With our pioneering project, we are sending a strong signal for the sustainable transformation of heavy goods transport in Germany and throughout Europe. The cooperation with ENGIE Germany is a real asset – together we are creating the infrastructure needed to establish the PORT OF KIEL as a green hub in the European logistics network.’

Flagship project in Germany and Europe

With the launch of the charging infrastructure project, ENGIE Deutschland and the port of Kiel are marking an important milestone for the decarbonisation of freight transport in northern Germany. The future location at Norwegenkai offers an ideal location due to its close proximity to the ferry port to Norway. There will be four charging points equipped with the Combined Charging System (CSS) standard and providing a maximum charging capacity of 400 kilowatts. The high-power HYC400 hardware from manufacturer Alpitronic will be used. Initially, three additional CSS charging stations, each with two charging points using the same hardware, will be built at the Ostuferhafen location in the newly created truck parking area – close to the ferry terminal to the Baltic States and Sweden; further charging points are planned for the future. Both locations enable both fast and overnight charging, creating optimal conditions for freight carriers to comply with statutory rest periods. The targeted installation of charging stations at central logistics hubs in the port helps to optimise processes. It also enhances the attractiveness of the location for transport companies that are committed to sustainable mobility. "Electromobility in heavy goods transport is a key lever for greater climate protection in the logistics sector – and is already the most economical solution in many applications today. At ENGIE in Germany, we are delighted to be promoting this goal for and with the seaport of Kiel. The new charging park is not only a milestone for ENGIE Vianeo in Germany, but also an important step towards emission-free freight transport in Europe," emphasises Jan-Niklas Ellerich, Head of Business Development & Sales Heavy-Duty Charging at ENGIE Germany.

As a subsidiary brand of the ENGIE Group, ENGIE Vianeo stands for powerful, reliable and transparent charging solutions that are actively shaping the transition to climate-friendly mobility. With almost 10,000 charging points across Europe – including 800 on French motorways and around 5,000 in Belgium – ENGIE Vianeo is one of the pioneers in the expansion of charging infrastructure for commercial vehicles, especially heavy goods vehicles. ENGIE Vianeo has been present on the German market since July 2025; in addition to the PORT OF KIEL, further projects are already in the planning stage.

About ENGIE Germany and the ENGIE Group

ENGIE is a key player in the energy transition, with the aim of accelerating the shift to a carbon-neutral economy. In Germany, we plan, build, operate and market wind, photovoltaic and hydroelectric power plants, as well as pumped storage and battery storage facilities. We support industrial customers, local authorities and the housing industry in implementing their sustainability goals by optimising consumption and implementing and operating highly efficient building and energy systems. With concepts for climate-friendly heat supply, mobility and digitalisation, we support the development of sustainable neighbourhoods. We trade in electricity and gas, supply end customers with energy, offer interdisciplinary engineering solutions in the fields of energy, water and infrastructure, and are one of the leading storage operators in Germany. In 2024, the ENGIE companies in Germany generated a turnover of €2.45 billion with around 5,900 employees.

The activities of the ENGIE Group, which operates in 30 countries, complement each other: generation of electricity from renewable energies and green gases, flexibility (especially battery storage), gas and electricity transmission and distribution networks, local energy infrastructures (heating and cooling networks) and energy supply to households, municipalities and businesses. The listed company generated revenue of around €73.8 billion in 2024 with 98,000 employees.
