Individual handling statistics
1.519 ships called at the Port of Kiel in 2016, with a total tonnage of 37,097,915 NT. The total amount of handled cargo, i.e. 6,479,727 tons includes goods movement via public quay facilities (6,052,388 tons) and private facilities (427,339 tons). The public facilities mostly handled vehicles, grains, animal feed, stone chippings, general goods, forest products, oilseeds and fertilizer; the private facilities handled petroleum, scrap and coal.

With 3,824,838 tons of incoming cargo and 2,654,889 tons of outgoing cargo, the ratio of receipt to dispatch shifted from 56.83 % : 43.17 % in 2015 to
59.03 % : 40.97 % in 2016.
In ferry traffic, the various check-in facilities have handled about 67.12 million passengers and 128.43 million tons of freight cargo since their commissioning. The number of passengers in ferry traffic in the year under review amounted to 1,599,375 and therefore exceeded the results of 2015 by 2.7 %, i.e. 42,032 passengers. In the freight sector, 5,472,623 tons of freight cargo were transhipped via the facilities managed by the PORT OF KIEL in 2016. This represents an increase of 512,688 tons (+10.3 %) compared to 2015.

Combined cargo transport (rail/ship)
In 2016, a total of 29,316 units (2015: 28,145 units) was handled at the transhipment facilities at Ostuferhafen and Schwedenkai - an increase of 1,168 units
In comparison to the previous year, the amount of handled containers increased by 930 TEU to 24,369 TEU, i.e. by 4.0 % in the year under review. The container tonnage decreased by 18,088 tons to 318,203 tons of cargo, i.e. 5.4 %.
Cruise ships & excursion traffic
In the year under review, 147 cruise ships called at the Port of Kiel (2015: 132). A total of 485,497 passengers boarded or disembarked.
Passenger transport in ship excursion traffic offered in the Port of Kiel decreased by 3,509 passengers/5.77 %: 57,339 passengers were carried from and to Kiel.
